Why every cup carries a seal

Look closely at the lower body of any Ondo cup and you will find a small round red mark. It reads ON over DO.

The name Ondo comes from the Korean word 온도, which means temperature. The seal takes the two halves of that word, On and Do, and sets them in one circle so that each leads into the other. The shape is meant to suggest circulation, balance, harmony and something without an end.

That is also how we think about a cup. Heat moves from the drink into your hands; the warmth you feel is the point at which the two meet.

In East Asian ceramics and painting a seal is how the maker signs a finished piece. We borrowed the habit. The mark is small and sits low, beside the foot, so that it never competes with the drawing above it.
