Ondo Studio

Our story

A studio in Namyangju, Korea, making cups to be held in two hands.

The name이름

Ondo is the Korean word 온도, temperature. It is the warmth of tea in the hand and the way a room feels when someone has made it comfortable.

We wanted a name for something that cannot be seen but is felt the moment you pick up a cup.

ONDO

The seal인장

The round red mark on every cup reads ON over DO. The two halves of the word turn into each other inside one circle, so the shape has no beginning and no end.

For us it stands for circulation, balance, harmony and the infinite. It is also how East Asian makers have signed their work for centuries: with a small seal, set low, so that it never competes with the drawing.

The drawings그림

Each cup carries a single plant, drawn in black ink line and nothing else. We keep to one colour so the four can sit side by side and still look like one family.

The four plants are plum blossom, iris, chrysanthemum, and pine with a crane. You can read about each in the Hwa Collection.
